Name: Emily Adeliade AVERY

ALIA: /Addie/
Birth: 26 MAR 1857 in Greenbush, Maine
Death: 8 MAR 1938 in West Enfield, Maine
Note:
All of the data on Emily was submitted by Erma Lorette (Granddaughter)
After 20 years of marriage, Edwin was killed instantly. He was driving a sled of wood across slippery railroad tracks. The sled skewed suddenly . He lost his balance falling and hitting his head on the track. This left her devasted and with 7 children. The older one left home.
Emily was not a large woman, but she stood tall and was very brave. She took in boarders. She was a seamstress and sewed for many families around. Edwin was a very religious man and had an open bible in the home at all times. I have a record of him either building or helping build a church in West Enfield, I believe. (From the Avery-Clapp geneology in Augusta, Maine). Her real name was Emily Adalaide, but she changed it to Addie Erma at some time along the way.
After being a widow for 3 years, she married Frank Annis, hoping for someone to share her load. She found she actually had one more "child" to care for. I'm not sure how long they were together. She unloaded him and paddled her own canoe. I'm sure it must have been hard in those days to struggle for a loving. She was really brave. They were living in a big old rambling house with sheds and barn attached. If she heard a noise in the barn at night she'd take the lamp in one hand and a club in the other and march all through the spooky buildings and hunt down the noise.
Many tried to take advantage of her situation. One feller in particular was always snooping around outside. A Peeping Tom type. Emily was aware of him out there and got fed up. She had a chamber pail in the upper hall that was used during night hours. She let it set a couple days and before dark raised her upstairs bedroom window. Sure enough, old Dick Welch started prowling after dark, sneaking in the window. Emily went upstairs, grabbed the chamber pail, removed the cover and out the window the contents were flung down on the snoopeer. She said the air was blue with profanity as he went tearing down the road and he never bothered her again.
While she was running the boarding home, a well dressed man asked for a room for the night. He was about 40ish. She served supper and after clearing away the dishes, the man asked for paper and pencil. Other boarders gathered around and he drew several pictures. One was of the Americal flag. He drew it so carefully and well that it almost seemed to be moving in a breeze. He was an Armenian. Next morning he said "I've left a couple letters upstairs. Would you post them for me? Emily said she surely would. She cleared up the morning dishes and picked up around before she went to cleasn the rooms upstairs. There on the bureau was the couple of letters. One was to a business firm and the other was addressed this way:
Miss Halli Fox
Banks of Sodom
2nd World
Kittery, Maine
Grammie mailed them and never heard from them again. I'm still curious as to the contents of this letter.
Grammie was a hard worker. She outlived all of her children except the oldest (Aunt Lottie) and my mom (Laura Walsh). One son, Uncle Fred was lost at sea.
Grammie was spry almost to the last of her days. She lived with us (Mom and Harry Walsh) the last couple of years. Lillian and I were with her when she died. She went quietly. I was not close to her as she was a very
private person not showing affection. A bad trait in our family. I admired her tho more so as I get older and realized what a rough time she ha
This is my version of Grammie. My sisters may give another side of her.

Rose Berlanger was born on May 30, 1912 in New Hampshire. She married a Berlanger while in her teens and had two children, a daughter and a son, dates of birth unknown. While a very young child, the daughter developed polio which left her partially crippled and afflicted with severe seizures, causing her to be placed in an institution. Rose worked as a waitress in her early years but soon went to work in a shoe factory in Nashua, where she was employed until she and Jim moved to Florida. She is in poor health at this time, but is still living with Jim in Nashua.

Earl worked as a woodsman most of his lie. As a young man, he spent quite a few years in logging camps in the northern Maine woods, lumbering and taking part in many log drives down the rivers each spring. He was a powerful man with shoulders like a gorilla and a neck like a bull, with a temper to match. But deep inside was a heart of gold.

On March 19, 1838, Harry and his wife sold to Allen Griffin a lot of land in Argyle Plantation for $350.00. Said land had been purchased by Mr. Bowley from Francis Allen on August 19, 1833. Mr. Allen had purchased the land from Daniel White. The lot is situated on the west side of the Bennoch Road. Said lot is numbered #9 and is the southern half of the lot which Mr. White conveyed to Mr. Allen. (I think this means that Mr. Allen broke the lot up into two pieces in 1833 and sold the southern half to Mr. Bowley.
